No, we’re always open to new members, so you can join at any time! There are no commitment requirements for the club! You don’t need any camping or hiking experience to join either. Every Arizona Outdoors Club trip will have experienced campers and hikers who can help people new to the outdoors. Some more intense trips will require previous experience.

Where do we go on trips?

We do trips all around Arizona and the Southwest. There will be hikes in the Phoenix area and potentially trips out of the state. Last year, we had trips to Zion and Yosemite.

What type of trips do we do?

Our trips have a wide variety of activities and difficulties. We do relaxed beach picnics, multi-day backpacking adventures, and everything in between.

How often are trips?

We typically have several trip options every weekend.

How do I sign up for a trip?

Once you’re logged in to the website, you can select a trip from the events page and click the sign-up button. From there, you can add your name to an open slot in the trip.

How does transportation work for trips?

We carpool to the trip location. On the sign-up sheet, you can either sign up as a driver or a passenger in someone’s car.

Can I be a driver for a trip?

Yes! As long as you have a car, drivers are often able to skip the waitlist for the most popular trips.

What if there are no open spots for a trip?

You can sign up for the trip’s waitlist. It is common for people to drop out last minute, so members on the waitlist are usually able to go.

Can I lead a trip?

Yes! Anyone can lead an Arizona Outdoors Club trip. If you do not have camping experience, a club officer will need to join you on the trip. We are available to help with planning any trip you want to lead. Click here to lead your own trip.

What should I bring on a trip?

For most trips, bring plenty of water, food, a flashlight, good shoes for hiking, appropriate clothing (check the weather before a trip), tent, sleeping bag/pad (if you aren’t renting). Make sure to check the trip description for additional details about what you should bring!

What amenities are at campsites?

Most of our camping and backpacking trips are dispersed camping, which means there is no water, trash, bathrooms, or electricity at the site.

Is there cell service where we camp?

It depends on the campsite, but many times there is not good cell service.

Do I need to own a tent/sleeping bag/sleeping pad?

No, you can rent gear from the club with your membership. You can request to rent gear on the trip sign-up sheet. If you’d like to rent gear not listed, contact an officer for more details about what we offer.

What are some general tips for staying safe on trips?

Unless it is a more extreme adventure, AOC trips are very safe. However, there is always some risk with the outdoors, so to stay safe:
(1) Never leave the group without telling anyone
(2) Bring plenty of water
(3) Download a map of the area you are going
(4) Never leave another club member on their own

What do I do if I see a rattlesnake?

Seeing a snake is unlikely, but if you do encounter one, don’t make any quick movements and walk away slowly. If you are bitten, immediately call emergency services and wrap clothing above the bite.

What do I do if I see a bear?

It is very unlikely to encounter a bear on an AOC trip; however, if you see one, DO NOT RUN. Face towards the bear, get big, and make loud noises. If the bear attacks, fight back.
